China Increases 2023 Defense Spending by 7.2% to $225 Billion Amid Growing External Threats

China has announced a 7.2% increase in defense spending for 2023, totaling 1.55 trillion yuan ($225 billion), slightly higher than last year's pace of growth. This increase in the military budget is in line with China's prioritization of enhancing its military capabilities, amid growing external threats. The US remains the country with the largest military budget, allocating over $800 billion for its military in 2023.

Outgoing Premier Li Keqiang has warned of escalating external attempts to suppress and contain China, highlighting the importance of military training and preparedness. China's military tensions with the US, Japan, and India, as well as its territorial disputes in the South China Sea, further complicate the situation.

China's focus on modernizing its defense is apparent, with billions of dollars channeled into military development in recent years. With a goal of transforming its military into a world-class force, China's defense spending still pales in comparison to the US. The increase in China's defense budget demonstrates its prioritization of its military modernization program, despite the country's annual GDP growth target of around 5%.
